The 2024 Eoui Sports Festival has begun. The festival takes place from September 5 to October 18. The games that are to be played include football, basketball, League of Legends Summoner's Rift, and FC Online. Football and basketball games will be held on campus, and all students are welcome to watch the games. Unlike the offline games, the online games may have viewing restrictions due to limited venue space.
How the Games Were Decided
To determine what games were to be played, the Student Council conducted an online survey from May 30 to June 10. The top 7 offline games, and the top 5 online games on the survey were selected. After the selection process, the games were announced through the Student Council Instagram and Everytime App on July 22. The offline games selected were football, basketball, badminton, tennis, table tennis, dodgeball, and bowling. The online games selected were League of Legends (Summoner's Rift, Howling Abyss), FC Online, Overwatch 2, and Rummikub.
Application Eligibility
The Student Council accepted applications from July 22 to August 2. Application eligibility was limited to SeoulTech students. This included international students that are undergraduates but excluded students on leave and graduates. For some games like football and basketball, students had to form a team with students from the same college.
The Cancellation of Some Games
On August 5, the Student Council announced that some games were cut due to insufficient applications. These games include badminton, tennis, table tennis, bowling teams, dodgeball, League of Legends Howling Abyss, and Overwatch 2. Also, the Student Council extended the application for football, basketball, bowling singles, League of Legends Summoner's rift, and Rummikub to August 9. Unfortunately, the extension did not help in saving bowling and Rummikub from cancellation. In the end, the four games listed above remained.
The cancellation of games is nothing new. Last year, bowling teams, dodgeball, badminton, Overwatch, and table tennis were also canceled due to insufficient interest. The games that were held last year were football, basketball, bowling singles, League of Legends Summoner's Rift, Fifa Online 4, and Teamfight Tactics (Riot Games). Considering that FC Online is just a rebrand of Fifa Online 4, the only changes this year are the removal of bowling singles and Teamfight Tactics.
Despite the Student Council's efforts to stimulate interest in the festival, a lot of games were canceled due to the lack of applications. However, fewer games do not mean less fun. With fewer games, organizers can focus more on enhancing the remaining events. The SeoulTech would like to encourage readers to attend the games and consider participating in next year's Eoui Sports Festival!
