The Face-to-Face Entrance Ceremony is Back On Friday, February 18, the 2022 SeoulTech entrance ceremony for freshmen was held. Prior to 2020, the entrance ceremony was held face-toface. But, because of the spread of the COVID-19, the entrance ceremony was not held in 2020. Then, last year, the SeoulTech entrance ceremony was held online for the first time. This semester's entrance ceremony, however, was held in a new way that was different from the two entrance ceremonies mentioned above. It was held in a hybrid format - both face-to-face and online simultaneously - because it was difficult to be completely face-to-face due to the recent spread of Omicron variants.
The main venue for the event was the 100th Memorial Hall. However, as most freshmen could not gather together in one space in person, only representatives from each department and a small number of freshmen gathered at the 100th Memorial Hall. Due to the risk of COVID-19 proliferation, freshmen who could not gather at the 100th Memorial Hall divided up into their colleges and gathered in a building for each college. Within those buildings, freshmen in the same college were divided into departments and gathered in different large lecture rooms. SeoulTech consists of eight colleges: College of Engineering, College of Information and Communication Engineering, College of Energy and Biotechnology, College of Art & Design, College of Humanities & Social Sciences, College of Business and Technology, College of Multidisciplinary Studies toward Future, and College of Creativity and Covergence Studies. For example, freshmen from the College of Humanities & Social Sciences gathered at Sangsang Hall, a building of the College of Humanties & Social Sciences, and attended the entrance ceremony in different lecture rooms based on college departments like English Language and Literature, Creative Writing, and Public Administration.
During the entrance ceremony, vaccine passes were required for all of the process, and students who could not show a vaccine pass could only participate face-to-face if they submitted a negative PCR test confirmation, taken within 24 hours, to prove that they were negative for COVID-19. For reference, freshmen who could not participate face-to-face were free to attend the entrance ceremony online by watching the video streamed in real time through SeoulTech's official YouTube channel. This entrance ceremony was a little different compared to the last three years, but it was a good way to make sure freshmen could feel at home at SeoulTech in spite of the pandemic. Then, we will introduce in more detail how this entrance ceremony was held below.
The 2022 Entrance Ceremony for Freshmen
The entrance ceremony was held for two hours from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM. The entrance ceremony was divided into two parts. In the first part, the entrance ceremony started with an opening address before proceeding with the entrance oath, congratulatory message, guests’ congratulatory greetings, introduction of SeoulTech department heads, and singing the school song. SeoulTech President Donghoon Lee was in charge of the opening address, congratulatory message, and introduction of SeoulTech department heads. Moreover, in guests’ congratulatory greetings, many guests, such as Jeongyeol Kwon of music band 10CM, delivered congratulatory messages on the admission.
In the second part, the entrance ceremony introduced Central Student Organization, each colleges’ organization and SeoulTech honorary ambassador, and then held performances by SeoulTech's officially approved clubs and the guest's special performance of crossover music band, YunyByeolgok(연희별곡). Finally, the ceremony concluded with a closing address. In this 2022 entrance ceremony, announcer Hojung Kim was in charge of all the hosts of this event and all of these processes were carried out in compliance with the COVID-19 quarantine guidelines.
We at The SeoulTech also sincerely welcome the freshmen to SeoulTech and hope for a brilliant campus life.
SeoulTech President Donghoon Lee's Congratulatory Message for Freshmen in 2022
Dear 2022 freshmen of SeoulTech!
First of all, congratulations on your admission.
And most of all, to the dear parents of our new freshmen class, you've worked hard to support and encourage your children in both material and emotional ways so that they can stand in this honorable place today as part of the new class of SeoulTech! Thank you for your hard work!
SeoulTech started as a Public Eoui-dong Vocational School on April 15, 1910 and boasts 112 years of history from then to the current SeoulTech. Throughout this long history, more than 110,000 students have graduated, and they are shining activities from all walks of life. For freshmen who entered our university today, please remember that it is a historic moment to establish a precious relationship with the many proud alumni of SeoulTech. As I am the president of SeoulTech and this university is my alma mater, I am also a person who studied at SeoulTech as a freshman year before you. As the president of SeoulTech and as your alumnus, I would like to ask a few things of you.
First, please spread your dreams at SeoulTech. University is not just a place to acquire knowledge, but also a place to prepare to enter the social field you want. Therefore, you are advised not to be satisfied only with your precious school days in the lecture room and on campus, but to engage further with spirit in the wide world off campus through various challenging activities.
Next, I hope you have school days without regrets. Be sure to experience various activities only possible when you are a student. I hope you have good conversations with your professors, socialize with new friends, and enhance your campus life with various clubs’ activities and volunteer activities. I think variety in your campus life will soon make the philosophy of life and work you each pursue more firm and realistic.
Lastly, please build a form of consideration and respect. In our society, where we live together, consideration and respect for others are closely related to basic ethics and moral values. You will shine even more as a true intellectual who has grown up at SeoulTech if you are considerate and respectful to others. Once again, we welcome you as freshmen to SeoulTech.
Thank you.
