Flowing through the heart of Seoul, the Hangang

River is more than just a body of water. It has a vital, deep-rooted connection to the city’s history and everyday life. For centuries, the river served as a vital route for transportation and trade, shaping the development of the Korean Peninsula. During the Joseon Dynasty, it played an important role in both military strategy and the movement of goods. As Seoul rapidly industrialized and urbanized, the Hangang River evolved alongside the city, becoming central to its modern identity. Today, it is one of Seoul’s most popular public spaces, with parks along its banks offering citizens a place to relax and unwind.

Each season brings a different atmosphere, with spring holding a special charm. With cherry blossoms in bloom and mild weather, the river becomes a perfect setting for picnics. People spread picnic mats on the grass, ride bicycles along the riverside, and take in the sunset as the day comes to a close. These everyday scenes reflect the unique rhythm of life in Seoul.

Among the many parks along the Hangang River, three locations stand out as ideal destinations for a spring picnic.

Ttukseom Hangang River Park

Located in the eastern part of Seoul, Ttukseom Hangang River Park stands out for its youthful and active atmosphere. It’s well known for its wide range of leisure activities, including water sports such as windsurfing, as well as various outdoor sports facilities. The park also features a swimming pool in summer and a sledding hill in winter, making it a year round destination.

Conveniently connected to Jayang (Ttukseom Hangang River Park) Station on Line 7, the park offers excellent accessibility. With bike rental stations and well-maintained amenities, it offers everything needed for a comfortable outing. For those looking to enjoy leisure activities, this park is a great choice.

Yeouido Hangang River Park

Yeouido Hangang River Park is widely known as one of Seoul’s most iconic spring destinations. During cherry blossom season, it becomes one of the most visited spots in the city. The park is connected to the famous Yeouido Cherry Blossom Festival, allowing visitors to enjoy a scenic walk before settling down for a picnic.

The spacious grounds and lively atmosphere make Yeouido Hangang RiverPark perfect for spending time with friends and family. It can get quite crowded during peak season, so arriving early is a smart move.

Banpo Hangang River Park

Banpo Hangang River Park reveals a different kind of charm after sunset. It is especially famous for the Moonlight Rainbow Fountain on Banpo Bridge, one of Seoul’s most iconic night attractions.

A spring evening picnic at Banpo Hangang River Park offers a unique experience. Visitors can enjoy the peaceful daytime atmosphere and stay into the evening to watch the fountain light up the river. The combination of nighttime city views and the gentle river breeze creates a memorable setting. It is also a popular choice for couples seeking a romantic outing.

The Hangang River connects Seoul’s past and present while serving as a place of rest in everyday life. Spring is the season when its beauty truly comes alive. Each park offers its own character, giving visitors different ways to enjoy the river. Whether you prefer a quiet afternoon, a vibrant crowd, or a romantic evening, the Hangang River has a place for every one.
