With the advent of the 4th industrial revolution era, the nature of work is becoming more specialized and subdivided along with changes in the industrial structures. Reflecting these demands of the times, SeoulTech founded the College of Creativity and Convergence Studies. In 2021, The College of Creativity and Convergence Studies established the Department of Applied Artificial Intelligence to foster experts in artificial intelligence. Then in 2022, the Department of Semiconductor Engineering and the Department of Future Energy Convergence were established, and each department recruited 30 first-year students. This article will introduce the two new departments.

Department of Future Energy Convergence

Energy, the basis of all human activity, has played an essential role in the development of human civilization, and will continue to do so in the future. However, the materials for producing energy that people have used are limited, and finding new and sustainable energy is a constant challenge for humans.

The Department of Future Energy Convergence (FEC) fosters global convergence talents to lead energy transition and cutting-edge energy technology development amid the rapidly changing energy industry environment.

Education Objectives

The purpose of the training is to develop talents with a "macro eye" that can lead the energy sector beyond ordinary energy engineering.

This will be accomplished through developing engineering expertise in energy technology and connecting with social science knowledge.

Furthermore, this training focuses on innovative energy technology to cope with climate change and to resolve issues in the sustainable energy Students in the FEC Department will learn

basic energy system analysis and major energy engineering theories in their first and second years, and later will receive practical and projectbased training including energy technologies of individual sources, energy service, energy policy, and strategy planning.

Student Benefits

1. Scholarship Guide

The FEC Department plans to expand the scholarship program in line with various industry-academic programs to nourish core talent.

2. Network Guide

The FEC Department will expand the industry-academic network through arrangements with major domestic energy institutions. The department will provide educationalopportunities  and  field  trips  that  are  directly related to  students’ future  careers.

3. Facilities Guide

The FEC Department continues to expand the necessary curriculum and facilities for field-oriented learning and research with professors who have diverse experience in public and private energy industries.

Career Path After Graduation

Students in the FEC Department can enter all fields related to energy.

The energy industry is distributed across almost all the public and private sectors, including leading conglomerates, medium-sized companies, and inno-biz such as start-ups. Moreover, given the global energy transition and government energy policies, many more new jobs will be created in the future for energy sectors.

Department of Semiconductor Engineering

Previous semiconductors were divided into memory semiconductors in charge of storage and system semiconductors tasked with calculations. However, these older semiconductors are insufficient to be used in new high-tech fields.

The ‘Intelligent Semiconductor,’ which can simultaneously play the roles of both kinds of older semiconductors, is at the heart of the recent advancements in semiconductor technology such as AI, 5G, IoT, and autonomous vehicles.

Education Objectives

The Department of Semiconductor Engineering was established with the goal of nurturing the best global professionals in the intelligent semiconductor field, which is at the core of the 4th industrial revolution era.

The SE Department strengthens the basic knowledge of semiconductor devices, design, process, and programming, and further focuses on the advanced semiconductor devices and system integration rather than circuit design. It offers practical courses such as experimental practice, industrial-academic projects, and statistics. In addition, students practice engineering work skills such as critical thinking, logical problem-solving, and English language skills.

Student Benefits

1. Scholarship Guide

By enrolling in the SUPER (Semiconductor Undergraduate Program for Engineering

Research) program, undergraduate students of the SE Department will participate in R&D (Research and Development) and will receive scholarships.

Scholarships for M.S. and Ph.D. programs at SeoulTech are also supported.

2. Network Guide

The SE Department is planning a dual degree program with prestigious universities overseas and internship opportunities with global semiconductor research institutions.

Faculty members with many years of R&D experience with global semiconductor giants such as Samsung Electronics and Intel will provide field-oriented education and English lectures.

3. Facilities Guide

The SE Department plans internships and academic programs at government research institutes and private industries. Also, special lectures by researchers and engineers from industry and government research institutes will be held regularly.

Career Path After Graduation

The students who graduate from the SE Department can work for global IDM companies, OSAT companies, materials, and equipment companies. In addition, students who want to pursue this major in-depth can study for M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in graduate school.

The establishment of new departments has a positive effect on existing students as well. All students will have various opportunities to converse with people who have knowledge in new professional fields. In the process, all students will be able to develop more integrated thinking. With the establishment of the Department of Semiconductor Engineering and the Department of Future Energy Convergence, the administration hopes that SeoulTech will become a better place for knowledge sharing and industrial development.
