International College is the first SeoulTech college to take exclusive charge of international students. With the admission of the second cohort of students coming, The SeoulTech looks back at International College's first semester.
Student Composition and Academic Operations
International College currently hosts 13 international students, comprising one from China, four from Myanmar, and the rest from Vietnam. In the upcoming semester, 11 new students are expected to enroll in addition; including one from Thailand, one from Iran, two from Myanmar, two from Mongolia, and six from Vietnam.
The college offers two majors: Korean Language Education and K-Culture & Technology. Students enroll in their first year without choosing a major, enabling them to study Korean language and culture before choosing their specialization in their sophomore year.
Korean Language Proficiency and Scholarships
Students are assessed based on the Korean Language Proficiency Test (TOPIK). A minimum of Level 3 is required to make an application, with Level 4 and above qualifying for scholarships. Students with Level 6 receive full scholarships, with additional accommodation funding available based on interviews.
Last semester, there were two students with Level 6 proficiency, and among the students for the forthcoming semester, one student has achieved Level 6. Further support is awarded based on academic performance each semester, with students at Levels 4 and 5 also eligible for partial financial support.
Student Activities and Cultural Exchange
Currently, most international students stay in dormitories, while some live in private accommodation near the campus. Although SeoulTech's clubs for the upcoming semester have not yet been finalized, international students generally have a strong interest in joining them. Given that these students meet the Korean language proficiency requirements and show a keen interest in Korean culture, it is crucial to ensure that international students have the opportunity to engage in the cultural exchange situations that club activities offer.
Future Plans and Expectations
International College's first cohort of students has significantly contributed to the department's development. The college is willing to support cultural exchanges between Korea and the students' home countries, with expectations for continued growth driven by the students' engagement with Korean culture.
Seunghee Han, the Administrative Director of International College, stated, "We anticipate that our students, with their deep interest and affection for Korean culture, will serve as bridges in the cultural exchange between Korea and their home countries."
