Teddy bears, sold in the 100th Memorial Hall
There are various SeoulTech items we can find on campus—from calendars and planners to help students stay organized, to varsity jackets that show school pride, and cute keychains to decorate backpacks. What do you know about the items in SeoulTech? Now that it’s back-to-university season again, let’s look at university items to get you in the mood!
University Mascot
Every university has a unique character that represents its identity. What about SeoulTech? While many students are familiar with Time Machine, Logi, and ST Friends, none of these are the official mascots of SeoulTech. The mascot featured on the university website was used before the official symbol animal—the black dragon—was designated. Additionally, ST Friends were created temporarily by the university for promotional purposes. As a result, the position of the official mascot is currently vacant. This year, the university’s public relations office will hold a contest to create a character based on the black dragon, and the SeoulTech Univcoop will produce goods related to these mascots. Many students were shocked to learn that ST Friends were not the official mascots. Still, students are excited to see how the new black dragon design will take shape through the upcoming contest. Like the mascots of Korea University and Yonsei University, this new black dragon mascot could become a meaningful symbol for student pride and solidarity.
University Goods
Currently, three places produce university merchandise: the Center for Public Relations, STUS, and the SeoulTech Univcoop. The Center for Public Relations produces only small quantities of items to promote the university. These are things students receive free of charge during the school year.
STUS is a subsidiary of the Seoul National University of Science and Technology that is 100% owned by SeoulTech. Students can purchase a variety of university merchandise, including clothing, stationery, cups, pouches, and varsity jackets. STUS often collaborates with students from the College of Art and Design when designing new merchandise. Also, STUS uses surveys to determine student preferences. The SeoulTech Univcoop provides two ways to purchase SeoulTech items: the online S.T. SHOP and the offline stationery store.
The online S.T. SHOP mainly sells apparel, including short-sleeved shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, varsity jackets, and long puffer jackets. The navy and black-gold varsity jackets are especially popular among students, so you can see many students wearing them around the campus.
The stationery store, located in the 100th Memorial Hall, currently has a wide range of merchandise, from SeoulTech tumblers to ST Friends and teddy bear keychains. Once the new black dragon mascot is officially unveiled, related merchandise will also be produced.
Student Opinions
Students have had various opinions about SeoulTech merchandise. “I hope the university adds various popular goods available at other universities like Korea University and Sookmyung University,” says Byung-Hoon Song (Department of Materials Science & Engineering). Yu-Seon Lee (Department Mechanical and Automotive Engineering) suggests, “I wish the university could use the mascot to show university pride and affection, and have many university supplies and accessories that can be used conveniently in everyday life.”
Various types of goods are available at the university, both online and offline. Whether through keychains, varsity jackets, or new mascot-themed goods, SeoulTech merchandise can be more than just souvenirs students carry for everyday use. These items can help students feel connected to the university and foster a sense of belonging within the community.
