Rendering of the Improved Main Entrance

From December 25 to December 28, 2025, SeoulTech carried out a four-day demolition project to remove its old main gate. Following the demolition, two major development projects are scheduled to take place in the main-gate area.

The first project is the “Main Entrance Revitalization,” also known as the Main Gate Improvement Project, which is set to begin construction in February 2026 and be completed by October 2026. The second project is the “SeoulTech Sports and Culture Complex,” scheduled to begin in August 2027 and to be completed in December 2030.

Main Entrance Revitalization

The Main Entrance Revitalization aims to address safety concerns near the main gate while strengthening the university’s symbolic identity. The university secured 3.2 billion won in national government funding from the Ministry of Education, providing a foundation for the project to move forward.

SeoulTech’s main gate, which had been in use for approximately 33 years, deteriorated significantly over time. According to inspection results, exterior materials fell due to weakened structural integrity, and safety reinforcements were only a temporary solution. In addition, the vehicle-centered, congested traffic layout raised concerns about potential collisions between pedestrians and vehicles.

Donghwan Kim, the president of SeoulTech emphasized the need for improvement, stating that the former gate structure partially obstructed the view of Dasan Hall, one of the university’s key symbols.

Once the project is completed, safety in the main-gate area is expected to improve through the extension of Hyanghak-ro, the separation of pedestrian and vehicle pathways, and the installation of an X-shaped diagonal crosswalk at the intersection in front of the gate. The university also plans to realign the entrance road with the campus’s central axis centered on Dasan Hall. Finally, to enhance both openness and symbolism, a plaza will be constructed instead of a traditional physical gate.

SeoulTech Sports and Culture Complex Project

The SeoulTech Sports and Culture Complex Project aims to build a multipurpose facility that includes sports spaces, a small performance hall, and recreation areas. The complex will be constructed near the main gate with financial support from the central government (43.7 billion won) and the Nowon District Office (5 billion won).

Recently, the project has sparked debate among students regarding the extent to which the facility will be used by local residents. Some students have expressed concerns that the complex may primarily function as a community facility rather than one intended for SeoulTech students.

In response to these concerns, President Kim stated that the SeoulTech will retain ownership of the facility. However, he explained that since Nowon District Office is contributing approximately 10–15% of the total budget, a corresponding 10–15% of the operating hours will be allocated to local residents. The university administration stated that it plans to prioritize student use during daytime hours. It also said it is considering opening the facility to residents mainly at night and weekends in order to minimize inconvenience for students.
