Group Study Room Updates © ST LIBRARY Website
On February 24, 2026, announcement about updates to the operation of the Group Study Rooms in the Annex Library was posted on the SeoulTech Library website. The adjustments are mainly about regulations regarding the minimum number of people for reservations and the authentication process for using the Group Study Rooms. The updated guidelines went into effect on March 3, 2026.
To learn more about the updates to the Group Study Room, The SeoulTech conducted an interview with Jaewon Jang, Academic Information Team Leader of the University Library Department.
Q. What was the motivation behind changes to the minimum number of students required for reservation and the authentication process?
A. Before the adjustments, reservation requirements were set for each room based on its size, as the Group Study Rooms vary in capacity. However, students typically preferred the smaller study rooms, while larger rooms often remained vacant because they required more people to meet mini mum occupancy requirements. For these reasons, our team decided to ease the reservation requirements, which led to the adjustments.
Q. Are there any plans to extend the operating hours and maximum usage limits for the Group Study Rooms?
A. Regarding the extension of operating hours, when students encounter problems while using the study rooms, we need to respond to issues, and close the rooms afterward. However, because the rooms contain TVs, it is difficult for us to provide additional management and equipment inspections required for extended hours. That is why those suggestions are difficult to carry out in the 1st semester of 2026.
As for extending the maximum usage limits, we have decided to keep them restricted because some groups monopolize the study rooms.
Q. Please give a brief introduction for students unfamiliar with the dedicated spaces within the Group Study Rooms.
A. There had been discussions about the lack of dedicated spaces for students in the International College and the School of Liberal Studies. As a result of this effort, in March 2025, dedicated spaces for students were established in the Group Study Rooms of the Annex Library. Currently, three group study rooms, 1S, 2S, and 15M, are designated for the School of Liberal Studies. There is also one group study room, 16L, which is designated for the International College. These study rooms can be used freely without reservation or authentication.
Q. Are there any upcoming plans related to the li brary operations of the Academic Information Management Team?
A. Rather than following a fixed plan, we are making necessary improvements in response to current issues. Recently, we have received a lot of feedback from students about the lack of study spaces. When there are other areas requiring improvement, such as seat availability or errors in the notification service in the reading rooms, we will do our best to address them.
Several improvements have already been made. For instance, the maximum reservation time per session in the reading room has been extended from three hours to four hours. Further more, considering the issue where advance notifi cations were not sent when students disable notifications on ST LIBRARY, SeoulTech’s mobile library app, the system has been improved to also send notifications by their own text message.
Q. Lastly, is there anything you would like to say to students who use the Group Study Rooms?
A. Since group study rooms are shared spaces, I hope that students tidy up after themselves and treat the facilities with care in consideration of the next users.
