남궁현선 ㅣ Approval 2026-04-14  |  No.23 ㅣ view : 28

Seoultech’s only university-wide theatre club, “Eoui Experimental Theatre Group” held its 93rd regular performance season from March 4 to March 7. Eoui Experimental Theatre Group was founded in 1979, which means the club has been active for about 50 years. The latest play, Rabbit Hole, is about a family in the U.S. Parents Becca and Howie lose their 4-year-old son, Danny, in an accident. Though the couple share the same loss, they deal with the grief in different ways. Minkyung Kim, director of the play, kindly agreed to an interview.

One Play, the Combined Effort and Passion of Many People

Q. Could you please introduce the Eoui Experi mental Theatre Group?

A. The Eoui Experimental Theatre Group consists of 11 teams: direction, actors, planning, lighting, sound, stage, clothes & props, posters & pamphlets, merchandise, promotion & filming, and make-up. The direction team manages the process of the play’s development and production, as well as monitoring the progress of all the teams.

The actors’ team develops characters by analyzing the play and practicing with each other. They seek to understand the feelings and relationships between characters through active rehearsal ...

all teams are essential to make one play.

Rabbit Hole, the Latest Play

Q. What was the reason to choose Rabbit Hole this time?

A. The selection process differs depending on the director. I myself have read and searched for numerous pieces. This is how I came to know Rabbit Hole. When I first read this piece, the play stayed with me. I wondered why the play meant so much to me. I figured out that the message from the play reflects my personal attitude towards life. There is a line in the play, “It becomes endurable after a time. First, it feels so overwhelming that it seems to weigh down on you to death, but afterwards you crawl out and are able to carry it. Like… living with a brick inside your pocket, so to say?” As with this line, the story says that even though you can’t completely overcome a certain pain, you can start to live again as you carry the trauma. This touched me deeply. So, in selecting this piece, I wanted to give a little comfort to people who are going through hard times.

Q. As the only university-wide drama club in Seoultech, what do you like about being a member of the club

A. I think it is rare in a university for around 70 club members to work together over a long period toward one shared goal. Furthermore, it makes it even more special that we can see the result, the completed performance on stage. Many people come together to produce the play. We think and debate, and sometimes our opinions clash. However, we feel it is very worthwhile when lots of people come to fill the seats to watch the show. People say, “The play is much better produced than I thought it would be because it is a club production.” It feels like the time we spent was not wasted.

Lastly, I think that producing a play is not something that one can do alone. I felt the importance of cooperation in the process of in teracting with many people.

Drama: Art That Reflects Life

Q. Please feel free to tell us about what you think of plays in general.

A. I think drama is an art that reflects parts of life. Therefore, while preparing for plays, I reflect on myself, and sometimes my perspective on life changes.

For me, Eoui Experimental Theatre Group means so much that it was the most important experience in nearly all my university life. Through this club and the drama experience, I have grown a lot.

She hoped many students would have such positive experiences in the Eoui Experimental Theatre Group. Also, she hoped many people would notice the club’s diligent efforts to present its productions, and she suggested readers con sider joining the club.

Her last word in the interview was “Yeon na bal!” (For the play and the country’s progress).
