Yugeun Yi, Creative Writing

Yugeun Yi has been fascinated with theatre since high school. He joined the theater club in his high school and the youth theater company, showing great passion for expressing himself on stage by acting and writing plays. Now, as a freshman of the Department of Creative Writing, he is ready to tell his story as the curtain rises on the new academic year of 2024.

Q1. Congratulations on your entrance! What made you decide to major in Creative Writing?

A1. Through my interest in writing, I felt I could express my thoughts in a very delicate way, so I became interested in reading novels, and it led me to opt for Creative Writing as my major.

Q2. Do you feel there's much difference between novels and plays?

A2. Novels and plays differ in means of narrative and dialogue. Novels unfold through narratives. However, in plays, everything has to be conveyed through lines, which is dialogue. Also, in plays, almost every line has to carry a degree of implicit meaning, and it makes them quite challenging to write sometimes.

Q3. In the youth theatre company, you have wrote and performed the play The Missing Case in Narae Village. What is the story of it?

A3. Narae Village is a place where unusual people live together. The story begins with a grumpy old man, one of its residents, going from door-to-door to find his lost denture. During the important it is to understand each other through this play. course of this, he learns about his neighbors' own situations, and he starts to better understand others' feelings little by little. The intention of this work was to provoke reflections on what it is to be an ideal adult. It's often hard to consider others and their feelings in this world, but I hoped that people could realize how important it is to understand each other through this play.

Q4. What do you think is the most important element in theatre?

A4. Audience is the most important element for me. As an actor and a creator, I felt very sad to perform without an audience during the pandemic era, because the message that I put into my work could not be conveyed directly to the audience.

Q5. What are your aspirations for your future path?

A5. When I write a piece, the basic stance I pursue is the happiness of everyone. It's important for people to be recognized as who they truly are, but I think there are lots of people, especially within certain minorities, who are not able or allowed to be themselves. That's why I want to continue creating work that will eventually make everyone happy and give people the confidence to live as they want.
