SeoulTech Independent Student Organizations
Most universities have independent student organizations that work for the convenience and happiness of their students. Among the various independent student organizations at SeoulTech, three central student organizations have the greatest impact on student affairs: the Student Council (SC), the Student Welfare Committee (SWC), and the Club Association (CA). In this article, we focus on the Student Council (SC) only, and we will cover the other two groups in the next issue. Each organization has different activities and events, and knowledge of and participation in these activities and events may contribute to the quality of students’ campus life. These organizations’ events and projects will give SeoulTech's students a more interesting and convenient campus life. However, many students are missing these opportunities because they don't know what the organizations offer. To spread awareness, we conducted written interviews with the president of each organization for more accurate and detailed information.
Interview with Student Council
First, we had a written interview with the president of the Student Council. The Student Council is a central student organization that works to maintain or change university policies and systems that affect our campus based on students’ demand and helps students have a more convenient and enjoyable campus life.
Q1. Please introduce the SC briefly.
A1. The 37th Be:ST SC of SeoulTech is a central student organization that works on behalf of all SeoulTech students to protect their rights, promote their welfare, and develop SeoulTech.
Q2. Our students might not be familiar with all the work of the SC. How does the SC help our student body?
A2. In order to solve issues students have with the policies of university authorities, the SC investigates various inconveniences and collects opinions to bring about changes in SeoulTech policy as well as the broader education policies affecting all Korean universities. For example, the registration time for a class was adjusted to 10:00 AM, from 9:00 AM, to reduce server lag on the SeoulTech University Information System (SUIS) by preventing the class registration period from overlapping with times of many concurrent users. In addition, we do activities to promote communication and interaction with students.
Q3. Please introduce the main events and projects of the SC.
A3. The main event conducted by the SC is the university festival. All the students of SeoulTech come together, and we host the SeoulTech Festival ‘Eoui Dae Dong Festival’ where we can enjoy our time and make memories together. Also, our organization hosts the SeoulTech Sports Festival ‘Eoui Sports Festival’, the Olympic Games of our university. Through these large-scale festivals, we are conducting projects to communicate, interact, and create pleasant memories for our students. In addition, we hold snack events during exam periods to cheer students up. These snack events can only involve the students who have paid student governing support dues. Also, we conduct various social campaigns, volunteer activities, and student union meetings, such as general meetings in order to make opportunities for communication with our students and local communities.
Q4. Due to COVID-19, various businesses currently face restrictions. Have any activities been restricted or adjusted due to COVID-19? Accordingly, what activities are planned for the second semester?
A4. Because of COVID-19, many activities have been canceled and postponed. Moreover, most other projects and events are mainly online. We don't know how COVID-19 will go in the future, but we are currently planning to hold the SeoulTech Sports Festival and the SeoulTech University Festival in the second half of this year. For both events, it is not possible to meet face-to-face like before COVID-19, but we are working hard to prepare events many students in various fields can enjoy. In particular, this year's SeoulTech festival is being prepared with the theme ‘travel’, an important element of life that has been lost due to COVID-19. We ask for your interest and participation.
Q5. There are so many different kinds of events! Is there an event among them where international students can participate?
A5. Yes! This SeoulTech Sports festival will be held in the form of an untact Olympics. Also, we are preparing for international students to participate in the medal count unit as well as the College and Club Association. These international students will belong to the International Students’ Club (SC) in this sports festival. In addition, we will encourage international students to participate in the SeoulTech festival, through the International Students’ Club (ISC). International students, please take part in the games!
Q6. Lastly, do you have any message you want to say to our students?
A6. For SeoulTech students and especially international students who subscribe to The SeoulTech,
COVID-19 hit the world, which has given us a lot of difficulties since last year. Nevertheless, SeoulTech SC will always be with you like best friends. If you have any difficulties in our university, please feel free to contact us. Our SC is called 'Be:ST' SC. 'Be:ST' means 'Be SeoulTech’, taking the path that is the most ours.
We are always ready to warmly greet and help you. I hope you all have a happy campus life and have taken care of your health over the hot summer. Thank you.
If you have any difficulties in your school life, feel free to contact us through our network or SNS channel.

This concludes the interview with the SC, which works for the students’ pleasant and happy campus life. Through this interview, we hope that many students have gotten information about events and activities that they did not know about and many participate in the activities to make a more enjoyable university life. We have also interviewed two other central student organizations - the Student Welfare Committee and the Club Association. We will include these interviews in the next issue of The SeoulTech.
