From February 6 to 8, SeoulTech began course registration for current and returning students for the first semester of 2024. As is the case at many universities, competition is fierce because there are many students who want to take certain classes, especially if It is a class related to their major. During this period, there were serious problems with how the registration processes were carried out, particularly for students in the department of Electronic and IT Media Engineering and College of Art and Design, many of whom have been told they will have to take an extra semester as a result. In this background report, The SeoulTech collected opinions from the university's online community and interviewed students from the affected departments, highlighting the concerns problems with the current course registration system.

After the course registration period was over, complaints from Electronic and IT Media Engineering students erupted on SeoulTech's online community application, Everytime. The main reason was that class quota was very small, and measures were taken to further reduce them even after registration commenced. With a capacity about 150 students per grade, only less than half of the students were able to register for the classes they wanted. Moreover, the attempt to reduce the class quota further began to feel deceitful to the students affected, with some interpreting it as a way of unfairly rejecting certain students who had already registered. Fortunately, this interpretation turned out to be misplaced, but the misunderstanding arose because of a lack of explanation when the measures were announced.

There were similar problems in a number of departments in the College of Art and Design. In the Department of Metal Art and Design, practical room seats are assigned one per student. However, the class quota was insufficient to meet this number of seats, and only a brief, one-sided announcement was made as way of explanation.

In the Department of Ceramic Art and Design, only a quarter of its students could register for their major's core classes. In an attempt to address this, an increased class quota was announced. However, as it was increased by only one person per class, it did very little to solve the problem.

The Department of Visual Communication Design also had an issue with the class quota being too small, and the large number of double major students in the department compounded the problem. Single major students were dissatisfied at not being able to take classes because of the number of double major students.

At the same time, many double major students were unhappy at being ineligible to take basic classes because of their grade year. This type of situation can create a vicious cycle for double major students, hindering them in keeping up with other advanced classes and causing difficulties with team-based projects.

In addition to this, there were various other complaints about course registration. For example, some felt the delayed course registration system is inconvenient, and the number of Liberal Arts classes is extremely small. Many students come to university hoping for the freedom to study in their areas of interest, but when these expectations are shattered even before the semester begins. It is natural for students to lose enthusiasm for studying.

The SeoulTech hopes SeoulTech will address the many complaints from students and take steps to fix the problems.
