Everyone has their own style of studying. Some people like to study talking and discussing with their friends in an open space and some people prefer a silent spot to focus on their work effectively.
To meet all kinds of students' needs for study places and help them exert their full competence, there are many places for studying and reading in SeoulTech.
Central & Annex Libraries
First of all, there are two libraries in SeoulTech: Central Library and Central Library Annex. In the Central Library, students can study in a more comfortable atmosphere than in the Annex Library because the building is spacious and has a high ceiling and cozy seats, so it feels very open. Students can borrow and read books in the Oriental Books Material Room and in the Western Books Material Room on the first floor, and they also can find some academic journals, degree theses, and lecture material in the Reference Periodicals Room on the third floor. The third floor of the Central Library has some great spaces for studying and entertaining such as the Multimedia Room and the Media Lounge where students can use desktops and watch DVDs for free.
Annex Library is for self-study, and students can fully focus on their studies. It has two Reading Rooms and one of them on the first floor is open 24/7 during both semesters and vacations. The desks are separated by dividers for high concentration and even the use of a laptop is prohibited because the sounds of typing can bother somebody. For those who want to use their laptops or study with their friends in the Annex Library, there are Laptop Rooms, Group Study Rooms, and Hullabaloo. Hullabaloo, which is Wahgeulwahgeul in Korean, is the only one of these that can be used without a reservation. For efficient use of these facilities, a mobile app called "ST Library" is necessary. Students are not allowed to enter the libraries if they don't have their student ID card or QR code which can get on the app. Through the app, students can reserve a seat for the Reading Room or the Laptop Room, and book a room in one of the Group Study Rooms in the Annex Library.
Moreover, while the students use a seat, they should extend the hours of use every three hours on the app or at the KIOSKs which are in front of each Reading Room. More information about the school libraries and the app can be found on ST Library website.
University Cafes
On the first floor of several buildings in SeoulTech, there are cafes that everyone can use at a cheap price, and they are the perfect places to study. They not only have coffee but also various kinds of beverages and snack foods like cookies and scones. If a student was really hungry and didn't do an assignment, this is the perfect place for a quick bite and a little studying before and after their classes.
Cafes in Central Library, Mugung Hall, and Techno Cube are especially recommended because they have many seats and power outlets, so it is great for studying with a laptop for a few hours. The cafes could also be perfect for those who enjoy "white noise" in the background when they focus on something. Many people actually prefer a slightly noisy environment to an extremely silent one. The cafes provide the pleasant noise of people talking and soft music playing. Plus, the one in the Central Library is a book cafe, so educational books and magazines are furnished.
Also, there is a unique coffee shop named Two of Us next to the Dormitory Gym. It is the most spacious cafe on campus and serves more kinds of foods and desserts than the other ones. The sofas are really comfortable and the staff are nice, so many students go there not just for studying, but also for having a great time with their friends or professors. In addition, a lot of the international students love this place because it is located on the basement floor of Surim Dormitory where most of the exchange students live. Some of the ISC (International Student Club) events are held here. Two of Us cafe is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM Monday to Friday.
Study Zones in School Buildings
If a student frequents a building that has no cafe and is far from the library, they can simply use a study zone in that building. Most of the SeoulTech facilities have study zones that everyone can use.
These spaces are especially useful for students who mainly go to one particular building. Sometimes students wonder whether the use of the study zones of each building is limited to only the students who belong to the department, but basically they are for all SeoulTech students. When they have a class in a building, they don't need to go and find other places to study. They are welcome to use a study zone.
For example, there are lounges on the 2nd and 3rd floor of Chungun Hall, so the College of Energy Biotechnology students normally use these places for studying or team meetings. Also, students of the Department of English Language and Literature use the small study zone on the seventh floor of the Sangsang Hall.
Hoping that all the SeoulTech students find the right places to study on campus and get a lot of wisdom throughout their campus life, we introduced some attractive places for studying at SeoulTech.
Details about school facilities can be found on the SeoulTech website.
