As part of SeoulTech’s ongoing expansion of its educational and research facilities, a new library is currently under construction. To ensure the safety of pedestrians and vehicles during the construction period, access to Hyanghak-ro has been temporarily restricted.

As a result, more people are using the boardwalk at Boongeobang Pond as an alternative pathway. This has led to renewed attention to Boongeobang Pond, one of the most symbolic places on the SeoulTech campus. Today, The SeoulTech takes a closer look at Boongeobang Pond.

The name “Boongeobang” was given in 1983 by Boyoung Choi, president of the Literature Club at that time. The name comes from a Korean phrase meaning “a crucian carp living in the pond.” At first, there was no boardwalk, but one was added in 2020 to enhance accessibility for visitors.

One of the most frequently asked questions about Boongeobang Pond is whether fish actually live in it. The answer is yes! Not only do crucian carp live there, but also northern snakeheads, other species of carp, and various aquatic animals make Boongeobang Pond their home. A grey heron, familiar to SeoulTech students as “Waxon (왝슨),” can be spotted fishing in the pond. Mallard families have recently been seen in the pond and are very popular among visitors.

Surprisingly, Boongeobang Pond is not an artificial lake but a natural stream. There were many concerns that the fish in Boongeobang Pond might freeze to death during the harsh winter. However, because Boongeobang Pond is a natural stream, and the density difference between water and ice prevents it from freezing, crucian carp can hibernate in the mud be- neath the water. Despite this wonderful advantage, Boongeobang Pond suffers from water quality and odor issues. Since many students have complained about the water quality and odor, the campus facilities crew is working to address the issue by running the fountains and submersible pump that are located in the pond more frequently and on a schedule. In addition, water quality tests are conducted once or twice a year.

The SeoulTech hopes that Boongeobang Pond, our cherished campus place, will continue to serve as a healing space for students.
